"Ah," Damia said thoughtfully. "Now I understand." She sipped her water. "I suppose that I can understand the need to study, but it's not really the theory that escapes me," she felt her face warm slightly, "I have more trouble on the practicals than anything else."

Looking at Madlos, a thought occurred to her. "Perhaps she's late? Maybe she decided to talk to one of the teachers for clarification and has forgotten the time? You should stay a while; see if she turns up."

Nodding thoughtfully, Madlos sips his drink before replying.

"It had occurred to me, especially as she is often tardy. Which, too, may be part of why she is having trouble keeping up. Missing the beginning of a number of classes, and then finding it difficult to keep focused can't help her concentration any. I've heard she has terrible nightmares.. Which is another part of why I felt badly for her. But I believe I will wait for an hour or two. Knowing her, she may have even studied all night and fallen asleep."

Sparing a last thought of concern for Ladria, Madlos turns his attention to Damia's earlier statement, looking intently at her, glasses sliding down his nose.

"But you have trouble with the practicals? Oddly enough, that's my weak point, too. The theory and all is simple enough to comprehend, it's connecting the 'why' with the 'how' I have trouble with."

Uriel just rolled his eyes and shook his head at Dayrion's answer.

"Fey wine, Ale,..." Uriel stopped when he turned to look at the person he was speaking to. "Water, Just water." He quickly said noticing the little girl's size

Damia shrugged at Madlos' suggestion. "It's not that I don't understand how, or anything. It's just that the magic won't do exactly what I want it to." She sighed. "In the end I just end up draining myself. I think the only class I'm passing practically at the moment is Illusion."

Pushing his glasses back up, as they continually slide down, Madlos nods.

"I can see how that would be frustrating. But to have a strength in Illusion is amazing to me. I can barely understand the theory of it. And theory is my strongest point."

Damia blinked in amazement. "Really?" she asked, "It's always come naturally to me." She paused for a moment as an idea came to her. "Here, let me show you something."

Quickly she drained her glass of water and set it on the counter. "You see the glass, right? You know it's there and real?" She waited for his response. "Now watch."

She raised her hand and focused on the glass, speaking as she worked. "An illusion like the one I'm working with now has two parts," she said, "First, you have to maintain awareness of the true glass and hide it from the eye of the viewer." The glass rippled slightly and faded from view. "Second, you have to present an exact replica in it's place." The glass shimmered back into place. "Then, you manipulate the illusion of the glass into doing whatever you want, while maintaining the illusion that the original object does not exist." The glass exploded, but the fragments dissolved before they reached them. A moment later the original glass shimmered back into view, completely unchanged.

"Ideally you would do it all at once," Damia concluded, "But that's the gist of it." She looked at Madlos. "Did that make more sense then the crazy stuff that the teachers try to spout off?"

Eyes wide, Madlos watches Damia's demonstration intently, nodding in response to her query, and murmuring a nearly inaudible "Ahh," now and again as the points click.

"It makes much more sense, thank you. Somehow when the instructors try to demonstrate or teach the theory, they seem to only be teaching theory during the demonstration and attempting to explain how to demonstrate an Illusion during the theory lecture."

Smiling gratefully at Damia, he continues cheerily. "And if you'd like a practice subject or partner for the practical application of the theories taught in other subjects, I'll be happy to offer my assistance."

Damia smiled. "I'm glad to help," she said warmly, "And thanks for the offer. I don't know that anything will help my practical skills outside illusion, but it would be nice to get the theory down."

Laughing slightly, she turned to face him fully. "Allow me to extend the same offer to you. I'd be happy to help you with anything insubstantial, as well as act as a test subject if necessary." Vague nervousness flickered across her face, "Just as long as you know how to reverse the spell before you cast it," she said in a joking tone.

Laughing, Madlos nods. "I'll happily accept that offer the next time I get stuck on Illusions, but I doubt I'd want to cast on a living subject for a while yet." Pausing for a second, he grins, "As far as theory... would you like a copy of my notes? I have an extra copy here, and you may find them useful. You never know."

Damia grinned back. "That sounds great," she said, accepting the notes. "Actually, what I'm stuck on right now is the theory behind movement of an object. How are you supposed to 'push' it?" She shook her head. "It's physical concepts like that my mind just won't accept. Divination I can sort of understand, it's all about willing yourself to see past the barrier by reading the ripples on this side... but physically affecting something?" Damia sighed. "How do you do it? Even If I can't manage it myself, it would be nice to learn how it works, if only to defend against it."

Sipping at his drink, Madlos ponders his reply for a moment.

"Dvination, I always considered more interperating the ripples on this side, and estimating what would cause them, than actually seeing past the barrier, unless you have a ntural gift for it. But moving an object.. let's see, how can I put it? Well, really, it all boils down to will, focus and visualization. It's really not as involved as the teachers seem to try to make it. Umm.. here.. I think this is need enough to be able to demonstrate."

Setting his half empty mug in the center of the bar, partway between himself and Damia, Madlos gestures to it."Here's where I usually get stuck. Why should I lift the mug with magic rather than use my hand? After all, it's right there in front of me. It's hard to muster will when there's no need for it, after all."

Clasping his hands behind his back, he focuses on the mug. "Now, with my hands out of the way, all I really have to do is focus on the mug, push my will towards it, and visualise the power wrapping around it and lifting it into the air." As he speaks, his brow furrows in concentration, and the mug begins to rise, wavering a bit at first, then steadying and moving a few inches to the side before settling back onto the bar. Unclasping his hands, Madlos continues, holding a hand up for emphasis. "It's easiest for me to envision my will and focus as another limb, just one I don't use like my other four. Does that make any sense?"

Damia tilted her head as she watched Madlos manipulate the glass. "I suppose that makes sense," she said after a moment, "Thinking of magic as another limb is never something that occurred to me. I wish that the teachers would explain it like that."

She called the bartender over for another glass of water. Once it was filled she raised it towards Madlos. "To better explanations than the teachers ever give," she said with a smile.

Grasping his mug and raising it in reply, Madlos smiles. "Hear, hear!"

Damia cast a glance at the time and, finding that she had plenty to spare, took a sip of her water. "Well, you already know where I'm going to specialize," she said, "But what about you? Which field appeals to you the most?"

Glancing around again quickly, on the off chance his classmate had wandered in, Madlos turns back to Damia as she speaks.

"Well.. since my main skill lies in Theory, I'm studying Conjuration. It wasn't the area I'd originally been interested in, but it's gaining my interest more and more as I study it. I'd originally wanted to study Alteration, specifically the manipulation of objects, but I have absolutely no real skill for it."
