Well, first of all, is it good upfront?
But then there's the "secretly"...
It's a conspiracy theory, I admit, but it might make some sense.
If you remember, back in like... I think 2006? IBM released its first AI. It was a big deal then.
The problem with it was that it was 100% unbiased, so 4chan immediately taught it to be nazi and fetishize Hitler.
I don't remember what else, but there was something else too.
Now, like all language learning apps, there's a little thing that tells you how familiar you are with this word.
There's a subreddit showing all the absolute insanity duolingo spews at times: https://www.reddit.com/r/*****/
Quote: |
I'm sorry for using the word "****" there, but I kinda had to, it's the subreddit's name... |
What if it's part of the code?
Sure, at first it was unexpected and unwanted, but people fell in love with it so the devs decided to keep it in.
Example: the word "lather". How often do you lather things? How often do you speak about lathering things?
Not very often, I imagine. I don't think I read the word "lather" in good 5 years, let alone spoke it. As a result, I'm not very good with it, not familiar.
Let's take an insane sentence as an example: I like to lather my children in cranberry sauce.
I won't be surprised if it actually gets into duolingo at some point.
Let's see the familiarity levels:
I - 100%
like - 90%
to - 100%
lather - 10%
my - 90%
children - 90%
in - 100%
cranberry - 60%
sauce - 50%
Here we have a sentence with the word "lather", which I'm only 10% familiar with, but can guesstimate the whole sentence based on other words.
Now comes the insanity: you can only lather so many things - chicken, turkey, mostly food, and occasionally screws when you're desperate.
It's gonna get boring real quick.
Here we have an insane sentence which I CAN guess, but it'll be much more difficult than just "now lather the chicken with eggs and put it in the oven". I'm definitely going to remember it, and maybe have giggle fits about it.
Is that duolingo's secret?
edit: I don't remember us having an autocensor... _________________

...Lather is what soap does. Slather is what you do with cranberry sauce. Duolingo's cracked. _________________ I am Tam. Tam I am, I like green eggs but I don't like ham.

~ I was actually thinking the soap thing myself so you're not alone with that.
As for the sentences. I thought they manually edited them. Like "She yelled loudly" is wrong but "Loudly she yelled" is right.~ _________________

Then every book I've ever read was wrong. That second one sounds like old English! _________________ I am Tam. Tam I am, I like green eggs but I don't like ham.
