The celebration of St. Yorick's Day is a celebration of sharing, of being together with those we love, our friends and neighbors and it is in his spirit that I again tell this story. Only this time with a twist. . .rather than just commenting on it. . . We are asking those who read it to join in! As in an RP, put you avi into the story. . .ride along, enjoy the music, whatever you want to include in OUR Story. (Don't worry if you are not a writer, this is talking among friends).
Let's make this a St. Yorick's Day Parade to remember

St Yorick's Day Parade

There seemed to be more activity around St. Yorick's Day, the thought of celebrating the great Saint's life was on many people's minds. It truly seemed like the people needed to feel his giving spirit in their everyday life, more than ever. Times seemed more unsteady, more unstable. It seemed that arguments were erupting over petty things and the spirit of friendship and giving was being all but forgotten.

The people seemed to be losing face in those who governed and those whose job it was to protect and defend them. It seemed that Zantarni was falling into a deep and dark funk of distrust and disbelief in the spirit of cooperation and giving.

It seemed that the Knights were being called out to try to break up these petty squabbles and found themselves getting more and more embroiled in them. The faire lands of Zantarni were in an uproar and the Lords and Ladies on high seemed powerless to do anything to calm the masses.

Something was needed to be done. As Scarz and Lightning patrolled through the streets of the city proper, he was stopped by a small boy who was crying and hungry. Scarz, dismounted and comforted the boy, giving him some apples and then mounted Lightning again, lifting the boy to the back of his saddle and then taking him to the city shelter. The boy thanked him and kissed Lightning and before he entered the shelter he asked if there would be a parade on St. Yorick's Day. Scarz assured the boy that somehow, there would be.

Leaving the boy he headed to the Knight's barracks. He put Lightning away in the stables and headed in to talk with the other Knights about a parade. It was discussed but not much seemed to be agreed upon. Scarz went back to the stables, and brushed Lightning's coat, then re-saddled him and went out into the apple orchard. He had an idea, to start a new tradition. He picked as many apples as he could, filling a couple burlap sacks and throwing them over the back of Lightning. Then they went home.

After again putting Lightning away for the night, he went in and talked to his Lady Nema about what he wanted to do. He knew it wasn't much, but if it made even one person happy in these times of mistrust and sadness, it would be worth it. She had smiled and agreed that it was a good idea. They both stayed up all night making preparations.

Soon morning came and Lady Nema and Scarz were busy, preparing their mounts. Both Lightning and Talisman, had their manes and tails braided, with roses entwined in the braids. Their reins we bedecked with a variety of flowers and their saddle blanket were covered with flowers that hand been woven together by Lady Nema and Scarz.

Scarz smiled as he placed two large baskets on either sides of the saddles, and filled them with the apples. Then it was time for Lady Nema and Scarz to get themselves prepared.

Lady Nema and Scarz had removed all of the weapons that they would normally have carried, and put on the flower crowns they had woven and the flower necklaces, and flowered capes that they had made for themselves and returned to the stable.

Scarz helped Lady Nema mount Talisman, then handed her a tambourine and small drum. He smiled as she looked so beautiful. He then turned and mounted Lightning and as they left the stable, he pulled out his small wooden flute. As they entered the town, he started playing it accompanied by Lady Nema. Playing songs of St. Yorick. . . ."The hands of Yorick are upon us" followed by "St. Yorick, the brave."

As the music was played, citizens began to come out of their homes. They smiled when they saw Scarz and Lady Nema, and Lightning and Talisman, resplendent in their flowers. As they came, Scarz and Lady Nema handed out apples to all.

As they played and rode slowly towards the center of town, more and more citizens joined them and soon others had brought out instruments and joined in with the playing of the songs of St. Yorick. There were even those who started singing the songs, and soon Scarz and Lady Nema were leading a parade through the center of town, a parade filled with music and dancing and laughter and joy. Apples were handed out to all and as they got to the city center, near the city shelter, Scarz dismounted as did Lady Nema and they found their way to the Gazebo in the center of the park. Lightning and Talisman standing beside it and children danced and sang as other citizens mounted the gazebo, to also play their instruments, the songs on St. Yorick filled the air.

The small boy that Scarz had helped the night before came rushing out of the shelter with the others who were staying there and he saw Scarz and Lightning at the gazebo and rushed to them. Smiling and singing as he ran.

Scarz smiled as he saw the boy and waved as the boy got near. Someone else had taken up the mantle of passing out apples, taking the baskets from both Lightning and Talisman and soon others were wearing flowered crowns and necklaces they had woven.

Scarz looked to Lady Nema and smiled. She smiled in return as they danced as they played. The little boy had made his way to the gazebo and hugged Scarz.

"Sir it is the best parade I have ever seen. St. Yorick would have been proud. Thank you for all you have done." The young boy was smiling and dancing.

Scarz looked at the little boy, "This is what St. Yorick's day should be all about, everyone having fun and enjoying the day. Dancing and singing and enjoying the company of so many others, all troubles forgotten, at least for this day."

Smiling as Meldrick hears music coming from the town square. He turns to his companions, Loriel and Cyrus, "Shall we join the festivities, my friends?"

Both Loriel and Cyrus nod as they follow the music.

The square is alive with people and music and the aroma of chestnuts roasting. Meldrick takes it all in and smiles, "it seems we there is something for everyone here." His companions nod, then Cyrus heads off to join other glendors frolicking in the snow, while Loriel spots several other faeries ice skating in the fountain.

The Elder smiles as his friends scamper off and heads towards the source of the music in the center of the square.

Riley had not been regularly seen in Edingtol for some time, though she did make sporadic appearances every so often. Things had not been the same and she hadn't known what to do. She often spent time alone, thinking about everything but being so overwhelmed she ended up not thinking about anything. The future was hard to see. What she could see, metaphorically, were many crossroads in front of her. Not knowing which one to take, she found herself standing still in the middle of the road in her mind.

Today, she found herself milling around outside of her home. She wasn't sure how much time had passed, but eventually, her ears twitched ever so slightly. Suddenly, she was aware of music, and thought she recognized the song being played.

What day is it? She thought. That's today? It had taken her a moment, but she suddenly realized that she must have been hearing the St. Yorick's Day Parade. Riley sighed softly. She wasn't sure if she wanted to join the celebrations. She knew she would be welcomed, but she wasn't sure if she was up for it. There were many unanswered and unresolved things on her mind. Though, she knew that those things weren't resolved easily.

Maybe it will be good to see some friends. She told herself. As she slowly began walking toward the direction of music, she began to hear the sound of people, laughing and conversing with each other.

Before she made it to the town center, her wolf nose began picking up the wonderful smells of roasting chestnuts and of what she only guessed could be baked bread and pastries. Following her ears and nose, she soon found herself in the town center.

Her eyes slightly widened and her ears straightened as she gazed around, seeing so many people gathered for the parade. She hadn't expected to see so many people, but she was glad. They all seemed happy and full of joy. Something about that was contagious, for Riley soon found her mood lifting.

She stood at the edge of the town center, taking in the sight and deciding what she wanted to do first.

Riley didn't have to wait long before a smiling person offered her a slice of pie. She could never turn down pie, especially apple pie. The person's joy was infectious, and Riley found herself smiling too as she slowly walked through the town center.

It wasn't long before she found herself wearing a flower crown and eating a candy cane. Riley found herself being drawn to the music. She had only intended to listen to the music and watch the people dance and enjoy the day. However, she suddenly found herself being pulled into the middle of the dancing by one of her friends.

Knowing she wasn't going to be able to get out of it, she just smiled and began the dance with her friend. She hadn't realized how much she had been smiling and enjoying herself until the dance ended and she had to catch her breath.

Still smiling, she became aware of feeling a little lighter than when she first felt. The things she had been preoccupied with weren't taking up so much space in her head at the moment, and she was glad she had joined in the festivities.

Riley made her way over to someone handing out mugs of hot chocolate and apple cider. Just as she decided to go with the apple cider, she was hit from behind with a snowball.

"Oh no, you did not." She grinned as she brushed the snow from her clothes. Riley put her flower crown on the head of the woman next to her before she took off after the miscreant whom dared to throw a snowball at her. Laughing, she scooped up a ball of snow and joined in the play.

Rayven shouted back, "Oh yes, I did!" She had to run very fast to avoid being caught. Rayven giggled as she rounded the next corner, her lungs burning from the effort. The pain was totally worth it, this was the most fun she'd had in ages. Friends, food, snowball fights...what's not to love?!

Rayven saw someone passing out something on paper plates up ahead and decided she was tired of running even if it meant she got caught. When she got close enough, Rayven could see that the paper plates held funnel cakes. They were her favorite! She couldn't resist the hot, doughy goodness with powdered sugar on top. Her mouth watered as she eyed the dessert greedily which inspired a friendly-looking elf to take pity on Rayven and hand her a large funnel cake. She grinned at the kind elf and thanked him before scurrying off to find a place to eat her delicious prize. She spied an empty picnic table off to the side and she sat on the tabletop placing her feet on the actual seat so she could face the crowd and people-watch as she ate.

Riley flung her snowball at Rayven but missed. Still laughing, she chased after her friend. She momentarily lost sight her of as they darted through the people.

She had to stop running to give her lungs a break, but she continued her search. It didn't take her long to find Rayven enjoying a funnel cake. Riley finally acquired a mug of apple cider and sat down on the tabletop with Rayven.

"This is the best." She said.

Rayven smiled at Riley and nodded. "Yes, it is. St. Yorick's is such a special time of year."

The funnel cake was just as delicious as Rayven remembered. It made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside. She took a break from stuffing her face and said, "It's good to see you again, Riley." Rayven smiled but it didn't quite reach her eyes because she was worried about Riley. Rayven knew that her friend had a lot on her mind.

Scarz sat on the steps of the town shelter watching the festivities and smiled. The kids were either involved in a major snowball fight or enjoying the food being shared with all. He chuckled as he noticed a group of faeries skating on the frozen fountain's surface, reminding him of a past time he enjoyed such a sight.

Lady Nema had gone off with Mrs. Thompson as it seems her twins were sick. Scarz smiled as it seems those twins were always sick, if he didn't know better, their sickness was that they were in Love with Nema and the attention she gave them.

He smiled as a little girl brought him a hot cocoa. she said Meldrick sent it to him. Scarz thanked her and she went back to join a small gaggle of kids that were sitting with Meldrick in the snow. . .no doubt they were listening to one of the old elf's stories.

"Best St. Yorick's Day ever!"

Rayven noticed that Sir Scarz was sitting on the steps of the town shelter across the town square from where she sat. Rayven waved hello and tried to grin but the mouth full of funnel cake just made her look like she was in pain. She swallowed her food and tried to smile correctly but only succeeded in making herself giggle. Rayven could only imagine that Sir Scarz probably wondered how many egg nogs she'd had.

Rayven was having a wonderful time and it looked like everyone else was having a great time too. This was her favorite time of the year, besides Halloween. The love and fellowship that was so abundant around St. Yorick's Day more than made up for the lack of mischief Rayven enjoyed on Halloween. Keeping Queen Blaze on her toes was a dirty job but somebody had to do it. She finished the last bite of her funnel cake and wiped her face on a handkerchief she kept in her pocket.

Looking around, Rayven wondered what to do next.

"It's good to see you too." Riley answered Rayven. She looked over in the direction Rayven waved, and saw Sir Scarz. Riley gave a wave and a smile too.

While she knew that the Yorick's Day Parade didn't take away everything that was on her mind, but it was a good distraction. And it helped her remember what she was thankful for. It also helped her remember what things she had the ability to change in life. Riley filed those thoughts away for later, wanting to enjoy the Yorick's Day celebrations.

"There's got to be some kind of pie eating contest....or bobbing for apples." Riley said. She also noticed the fairies ice skating on the frozen fountain water. "Or, there's always this!"

She jumped off of the table top and flopped down on her back into a patch of snow. Grinning, Riley moved her arms and legs to make a snow angel.

Scarz chuckled when he saw Lady Rayven wave at him, at first he thought she might be in pain with the face she made and then he realized that she was eating funnel cake. when he waved back he saw that Lady Riley had joined Lady Rayven and waved to her, too.

Thinking about the funnel cake, Scarz' stomach growled and reminded him that he hadn't eaten anything but a few apples earlier. He sniffed the air and smiled as his nose led him to a small stand where he found little shish kabobs of beef, peppers, tomatoes and onions were being grilled. Allison and her father, the butcher were manning the both and offered Scarz a couple of kabobs, which he gladly accepted.

After thanking them, he looked about for a place to sit and found a table near the bandstand. What had started out as just a parade to brighten a young man's St. Yorick's Day had turned into a party for the whole town.

Rayven watched Sir Scarz walk over to a food stand to get something to eat after he had waved back at her and Riley. It was hard not to get hungry with all the good smells in the air. If she hadn't just eaten, Rayven might have followed Sir Scarz to investigate what he was about to eat.

She was just about to answer her friend when Riley suddenly flopped on the ground making familiar movements. "A snow angel!", cried Rayven. Rayven loved making snow angels. The snow was very cold but making snow angels felt so magical, that any discomfort was quickly forgotten.

She practically dove into the snow next to Riley, rolled over on her back, and started moving her arms and legs in the same manner. Rayven looked up at the sky as snowflakes fell on her face. She looked over at Riley and laughed wondering if anyone would join them, or if everyone that saw them would think they were just a couple of goofballs.

Meldrick had just finished another story and the children began to stand and stretch when little Gloria yelled, "Meldrick, what are those two ladies doing?", but before he could answer, one of the boys smiled and screamed, 'SNOW ANGELS!!!"

The Old Elf chuckled as a few of the children looked to him, "It's all right children, today is about having fun. . .go and join them!" He smiled as the children ran off to join Lady Rayven and Lady Riley. Listening to their laughter and giggling, he smiled as he slowly followed them and Loriel had rejoined him after skating in the fountain. . .then quickly she left to join the 'Snow Angel" brigade.

Riley's ears twitched when she heard an excited declaration of snow angels. Her body remained flat but she lifted her head and her eyes widened when she saw a small pack of children running straight for them.

"We have company!" Riley smiled and laughed. "Ohhhh, I bet we can also make any army of snowmen now!"
