New Sewing Machine

So, a friend gave me her sewing machine. I have no idea how to use it, but I would like to learn. With my weird work hours, I'm not sure if taking lessons at a craft store would be possible. However, I've been known to teach myself how to do things. After reading the instruction manual, I'm still a little confused, but kind of wanting to start practicing.

Are there any easy things to make/sew for a total newbie?

Also, I think I'm going to have to buy more feet (is that the correct term?) It looks like the only one I have is for zig zag. Can you use that one for straight sewing?

Google sewing projects for beginners, there's all sorts of stuff for you to start out with. Here's a couple I found:

And I'm not sure what foot you actually have, but the zig zag is also called the universal, and can be used for any sewing. Just to make sure though, take a look HERE. They have advice and pictures, so you can see if what you have is the universal foot. If it is, I'd wait to invest in more.

When moving the needle never turn the knob away from you only EVER turn it towards you. If you don't you may throw off the timing.

Ooohh, so many things to try! I need to get myself some fabric now =)

Good to know, Moon. I did not know that. If the timing does get thrown off, is it obvious and can I fix it?

It is obvious because when it is a problem you can't sew at all.

Maybe? How good are you at fixing moving machines?
