My problem is more that I can't find any feathers at all in two of those places (it would indeed add up perfectly with the influence pattern). I've looked over them about 30 times now, and nothing.

That's what the quest help threads are for.
It's very difficult to tread the fine line of making a clue vague enough to be challenging without making it too difficult, yet not making it so easy that you might as well have said, "It's over here!".

Sure, but a tiny little hint that it's not the same as the others? I just feel it should be possible to figure it out without the help thread (though I guess having to post here helps with the currency, so there's that).

I am missing 3 feathers...I looked in one spot and was confused as to why I didn't see a feather there.
