This should give you a lot to do but I wouldn't get overwhelmed. I've collected a lot more then just the basics on this list that I give out. I'll tell you what you need to start with. From the top down to slip stitch is your must know in order to start. This are the ones found in all patterns. (Though double crochet isn't found in stuffed animals/amigurumi much).

From there I would look at the first two links under Amigurumi tutorials. The reason is that the first will give you some of the most helpful tips I have ever seen and the second, because amigurumi uses only a stitch or two it is an easy way to learn patterns without getting exposed too more information then can easily be taken in.

Finally the hook you should get is a size H. It will have the size on the package and on the flatish part of the hook. This will work for most common yarns. Another tip is that yarns come with the recommended size under the barcode on the package. This is a guide though. It will depend on what your tension, how tight or loose, of your work what hook will work for what yarn. You can worry about that later though.

Books:
I was looking at this book today and thought it would be a really good one to recommend for those just starting out or would like to keep a detailed book around. Ya it is pretty short but the pictures are crisp and the instructions, from what I saw, looked pretty detailed. Not to mention it has both right and left instructions. Link

I'm curious to see how many crocheters we have here... Yes

So what are you working on currently, Moon???

Unfortunately, since I'm so terribly unorganized, I still cannot find my crochet hooks, so I haven't been able to crochet lately...
Grr

I have never done any crochet in my life.. I love to see what people make and have been eyeballing my grandmom's crochet machine since she can't do it anymore so good chance I might take it up as a small hobby. :3

Shugga you still can't find your hooks? STILL?!

I'm currently working on a curly wurly scarf. I've also been doing flowers. I'm behind on my moose. I can't find the thread I need for it.

Rhumbullion: I don't know how to do much knitting and it would take me a wile to make a post about it. Plus it may be a good idea to start a second thread with it seeing as that is a lot of information. On top of that what about loom knitting or tusken(sp) crochet? I think it would be a bit much to start jumping into everything right now.

Ryver: What is this you are going on about? -never heard of a crochet machine-

You inspired me to take out my crochet hook and start crocheting a little bit :3 I'm very much out of practice but I know very little anyway, lol
When I have time, I plan to check out your links to see if they can help me with my technique.

I'm currently working on knitting a blanket so I might do some crocheting here and there. One project at a time or I might never finish any :3

Glad to hear it.

I know what you mean about one project at a time. I need to take that advice.
